Imagine you’re playing your favorite sport or going for a run when you suddenly feel a sharp pain in your knee. Walking it off isn’t an option–any weight on the joint is too painful. You probably resort to using crutches to get around.

Physical activity always comes with a risk of injury. However, most people don’t think that knee sprains could be a possibility. Unfortunately, though, they are quite common and can be very debilitating. If you have ever suffered from a knee sprain, you know how painful it can be.

What Causes a Knee Sprain?

Twisted knee injuries are very common, especially among athletes. It happens when you twist your knee too far in one direction or fall and land on your knee the wrong way. A knee sprain can be very painful and make it difficult to walk or even stand.

There are different degrees of knee sprains, from a first-degree sprain, the least severe, to a third-degree sprain, the most severe. The way to treat your knee sprain will depend on the degree.

If you have a knee sprain, it is important to see a doctor. They will be able to tell you how severe your knee sprain is and whether or not you need surgery.

7 Ways to Treat Knee Sprains

  1. Rest

    This one is pretty self-explanatory. If you’ve sprained your knee, you will need to take a break from physical activity and let it rest. It doesn’t mean you have to stay in bed all day, but you should avoid any activities that put stress on your knee.

  2. Apply Ice

    Applying ice to your knee can help reduce swelling and pain. You should wrap the ice in a towel and apply it to your knee for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day.

    You can also try using a cold compress, basically just a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel. It works just as well as ice and is a lot less messy!

  3. Compression

    To help reduce swelling, you can also apply a compression bandage to your knee. Make sure that the bandage is not too tight, as this can increase pain and swelling. You should leave the bandage on for at least 48 hours after your injury.

  4. Avoid Putting Any Weight On Your Knee

    If you’ve sprained your knee, it’s important to avoid putting any weight on it. That means no walking, running, or standing for long periods. If you have to be on your feet, take breaks often and prop your knee up when possible.

    It’s also important to avoid stairs and uneven surfaces, as these can put additional strain on your knee. If you have to be active, do low-impact activities such as swimming or riding a bike.

  5. Take Over-The-Counter Pain Medication

    You can take over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen if you’re in pain. These medications will help reduce swelling and pain. Make sure to follow the instructions on the package and only take the recommended dosage.

  6. Brace It

    If you’ve sprained your knee, you may need to wear a knee brace for running or walking to help support it. Knee braces are available at most pharmacies or online. Make sure to choose a knee brace that is the right size and fit.

    Wearing a knee brace will help to reduce pain and swelling. It will also help to support your knee and prevent further injury.

    Knee braces can be worn for a few days or up to a few weeks, depending on the severity of your injury.

  7. Visit a Doctor

    If you’ve sprained your knee, it’s important to see a doctor. They will be able to diagnose your injury and recommend the best course of treatment.

    In some cases, knee sprains can be serious and may require surgery. If this is the case, your doctor will refer you to a specialist.

    Surgery is usually only recommended for severe knee sprains or if you have a history of knee injuries. Physical therapy is also recommended to help you recover from your knee sprain.
