Physical Therapy at Home

Are you experiencing difficulties with mobility within your home?  Stairs, navigating the bathroom, in and out of bed, steps at the front door?  These are areas of everyday life that can be challenging following an illness or a surgery, can be the cause of a fall, and can be limiting independence at home.

You could go to outpatient physical therapy at a clinic, try and describe the problem occurring at home and hope to recreate the concern, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a physical therapist come to your home and address the problem?

Our expert team of physical therapists have over 65 years of combined expertise treating sports and orthopedic injuries.
“I wasn’t so lucky on the 3 of December. I fell off the top step of the ladder & the top step of my porch. I have been blessed, truly blessed to have worked with Amy Appel. Who has been my physical therapist for at least a year. I was in a wheelchair for two months which at times almost broke me. I’m a get up and go person.. I was able to go to a walker. Today Amy moved me to a cane.

There aren’t enough words to describe how wonderful, caring ,kind, honest Amy is. She’s not just my therapist she’s also a great friend..My miniature schnauzer Daisy, meets Amy at the door as soon as she pulls up. It makes me feel so awesome that Amy truly cares about her. God sure put Amy in the right profession. Her happy nature makes you want to push yourself to please her. Amy gets as excited as I do when I am able to do what she wants.”

Mobility / Falls

Decreased mobility and strength can lead to having difficulty getting around your home and with your daily tasks. Decreased strength and conditioning can lead to falls. Physical therapy can address both of these and treatment includes strengthening, stretching and retraining postural mechanics.

Home Safety

It can be helpful to have your home evaluated for fall risks from a Physical Therapist. Things like rugs can be trip hazards and placement of furniture is important for safety. The Physical Therapist can evaluate your home for hazards or risks and modify arrangements to make you more safe.

Post-operative care:

Early physical therapy after a surgery is imperative for your success. Sometimes getting to the clinic can be challenging after a surgery due to arranging rides and pain. Having a PT come into your house and treat you for a few weeks before going into the clinic can help to bridge this gap

PT Interventions

Great Northern Physical Therapy is providing a new service for the Gallatin Valley, in-home, outpatient physical therapy that is covered by insurance.  We can bill any insurance just as if it was a normal outpatient visit. You do not need to be homebound to receive this service; we are providing this as a convenience for people who would prefer to not go to an outpatient clinic.  Whether for health reasons (concern over exposure to viruses), transportation problems (no vehicle), balance problems/weakness/difficulty walking, or whatever the reason, we will be happy to come to your home.

Why PT?
Regular completion of a home exercise program is vital to success with physical therapy; this is well documented in the literature.  Having a physical therapist work with you in your home can eliminate many of the barriers that keep you from following through with your exercise program, as well as address home modifications to improve your safety in your home.

I have come to Great Northern off and on for several years but this past year I had two knee replacements 6 months apart and had many appointments during that time. My recovery was outstanding both times but I also appreciated the personal care and the way my sometimes-changing challenges were addressed. I thought there a great balance between understanding where I was at but pushing me to do a little better. I worked with Kara mostly over this past year but have also worked with James and a couple others. I think all the therapists were knowledgeable and helpful and I would definitely recommend them. As I age, I’m sure I will be back but I’m confident they will be there for me.

I had a wonderful experience working with Kate Dolan in 2021. I was experiencing urinary "urgency" and signed up for Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy with Kate. Kate is a fantastic teacher. Within a few sessions, I had no more episodes of "I'm going to pee my pants, now." As a bonus, Kate also helped me a lot with lifelong constipation issues. I really think every woman should do a few sessions of pelvic floor PT--you learn so much. At Great Northern, I've also had great experiences working with Christian Appel for my frozen shoulder and knee arthritis, and with Jim Sykes for bike fitting (a much-needed service in Bozeman). I will return to Great Northern for any PT needs in the future. (So many activities, so many joints, so many years behind me; the next injury can't be too far off, haha.)

Started PT with Christian Appel here for strengthening a-three-times-operated-on left shoulder that hurt just about all the time whenever I moved it or lifted anything. Christian commits his full time and attention to me each time I've been in. He is patient and kind. My shoulder is much stronger and more functional. It feels really good and solid. We're close to ending our sessions but more range of motion and strength apparently is available. The gym is spacious, airy and bright, and the equipment in it covers a broad range of needs. The administration is great, keeping me well-reminded of my appointments and being available and helpful when I need to reschedule or have other questions about my care. I have had plenty of interactions with others on staff and all of them have been wonderful. I've had PT at several Bozeman providers and I place GNPT at the top of them all by a wide margin. Highly recommend.
